Zotero collects, organises and cites research, with citation tools for Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs. It earns second for keeping sources attached to the work they support rather than rebuilding a bibliography at the deadline.
It beats #3 on usefulness for source-based writing, but #1 covers more everyday assignments. Check imported titles and authors before citing. Library data sync is free; the 300 MB free storage allowance concerns hosted attachment syncing, not local files. Extra hosted storage costs money.
