Snopes is especially useful for recycled rumours and confusing images. Its current ratings distinguish a manipulated image from a genuine image paired with a misleading caption. That difference matters: finding that a photograph is real does not establish that the accompanying story is real.
It beats AP here for this explicit treatment of different rumour formats. AP gets the edge if you mainly want news-event context. Snopes’ own ratings page was updated in May 2026; read the definition rather than assuming every label simply means true or false.
