Find Orion’s three Belt stars, then the Sword beneath them: M42 is its hazy highlight. January is a good northern observing month. Binoculars offer a small luminous patch; the vivid colours and intricate gas in this photograph require imaging, not just a better look.
It beats the Hyades for introducing a nebula, but the Pleiades reveal a cleaner star pattern. Moonlight and sky glow make the comparison less forgiving. Confirm the Sword’s position, then look for haze instead of trying to reproduce the picture.
