Composite volcanoes, also called stratovolcanoes, combine lava flows with fragmented eruptive deposits and other material. Iliamna shows the steep mountain profile associated with this group, although snow conceals much of the rock.
It belongs here because the familiar cone is a useful outline, not a complete diagnosis. Do not assume its interior consists of tidy alternating layers. Compare the upper slopes with the broad shield at #10; a photograph cannot establish current activity.
