Pelé won the World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970. Those three titles give his case unusual historical weight, although injury limited his 1962 involvement. We rank him second for a combination of attacking range and defining performances in football’s global story. The argument for first is obvious: why should the benchmark become the runner-up? We narrowly prefer Messi’s blend of creation and scoring under our criteria. Comparing eras remains uncertain; three team trophies are evidence of achievement, not a mathematical proof of individual supremacy.
