Cruyff’s Netherlands finished one win short of the 1974 World Cup title. That defeat does not erase his case: we rank him fifth for making movement and attacking intelligence central to our idea of greatness. Here we assess the player, not award extra credit for his later coaching career. The counterargument is that influence can become a vague substitute for individual performance. Fair enough: place trophies or finishing above creative direction and he may fall. If greatness includes changing what teammates can imagine doing, fifth may be too low.
