Sutton Hoo objects, Egyptian mummies and Islamic-world collections give the British Museum our strongest first-visit range. General entry is free; advance booking is recommended for priority during busy periods. Choose two or three sections rather than trying to finish the whole museum.

It beats the National Gallery because we favour discovery across cultures over a focused painting visit. Art lovers can reverse them. First place rewards what a mixed-interest group can explore together, not a claim that every gallery is open. Which museum would you choose first?
