Which free London museum deserves your first stop? We rank ten museums and art galleries for a first visit, prioritising collection breadth, distinctive highlights and practical access, in that order. This is editorial judgement, not a popularity table; your interests can change the order.
Rules checked on 10 October 2026: free means general collection entry, not every exhibition, event or purchase. Check booking and closures before travel. For wider itineraries, see our European city ranking and Roman amphitheatres.
