Hope, the blue whale skeleton in Hintze Hall, makes a memorable start at South Kensington’s Natural History Museum. General galleries are free. A free entry ticket guarantees admission, useful when weekends or school holidays bring queues. Paid exhibitions are separate choices.

It beats V&A; for the immediate appeal of the natural world to a mixed-age party. The National Gallery ranks higher for a focused art visit. Families can reasonably put it first. Start with the hall, then choose one subject; trying to add every neighbouring museum makes a rushed day.
