Spielberg takes fifth for making scale feel personal. Start with Jaws (1975), where a shark threatens a seaside community. Pay attention to the people waiting for danger and to what stays out of sight: suspense depends on more than the creature itself.
We put his blend of readable action and emotional involvement above Bergman’s more inward cinema. Scorsese edges him for moral ambiguity. Give accessible storytelling and shared excitement the greatest weight and Spielberg becomes a credible winner, not merely a box-office choice.
