Led Zeppelin finish second because their heaviness comes with contrast. Led Zeppelin IV (1971) and Physical Graffiti (1975) supply “Stairway to Heaven” and “Kashmir,” respectively. The Rock Hall describes a musical mix drawing on blues, folk and soul, with Jimmy Page’s production and the band’s improvisational live approach widening the hard-rock template.
Begin with IV, listening for changes of scale between the quieter passages and full-band climaxes, before moving to the broader Physical Graffiti. We hear a balance of individual musicianship and ensemble identity that edges Queen under our album-focused criteria. If guitar-driven power is what “rock” means to you, Zeppelin may be the winner. They remain second here because we give the Beatles’ songwriting range and studio transformation more weight than instrumental power alone.
