Return measures a gain or loss relative to the amount invested over a stated period. If 100 units become 105 and pay a 2-unit distribution, the one-period total return is 7% before costs and tax. A price-only chart misses that income. Annual and multi-year returns are not interchangeable. Return belongs here because fair comparisons require the same period, a clear treatment of distributions, and attention to fees.
