Liquidity describes how readily an asset can be turned into cash without a substantial cost or price concession. A listed security may trade quickly in normal conditions, while property can take much longer to sell. Even traded assets can become illiquid during stress. This term matters because an asset’s quoted value and the cash obtainable today are different questions; a high return cannot compensate automatically for inaccessible funds.
