An interest rate states the price of borrowing or the interest earned on saving for a given period. With simple annual interest, borrowing 1,000 units at 5% for one year costs 50 in interest before fees. Fixed and variable rates behave differently, and a central-bank rate is not every customer’s loan rate. This foundation ranks second because period, rate structure and additional charges shape the actual cost.
