Jobs cofounded Apple with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne in 1976. Wozniak designed the Apple II; Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007. Jobs’s strongest case is connecting technology, presentation and usability into products ordinary buyers can understand, rather than inventing every component.
He beats Gates because product coherence wins our final comparison over platform breadth. Gates can reasonably take first under a different priority. Teams made these products possible, and first place is not moral perfection. Who is your number one, and which criterion changes the order?
