Malbork wins for the strongest combination of defensive planning, brick Gothic architecture and ceremonial interiors. Its High, Middle and Low castles let you read a whole complex rather than one impressive façade. It edges Windsor because the relationship between walls, courtyards and grand rooms is the main attraction.
Much was restored after destruction in 1945. Choose the Historical Castle Route if interiors matter; a grounds route is a different visit. Compare the scale of a courtyard with the rooms it serves.
