Hohenzollern is ninth because its hilltop castle combines a dramatic silhouette with museum rooms you can explore at your own pace. The present building dates from 1850–1867. It beats Bodiam on interior variety, but Neuschwanstein’s more distinctive romantic concept wins the close comparison.
Check the Royal Strolling route for self-guided visits. St Michael’s Chapel survives from the earlier castle; the Protestant chapel was closed for restoration in October 2026. Distinguishing those layers makes the visit richer than reading all the towers as medieval.
