Edinburgh earns fifth with its range of buildings and the Great Hall’s hammerbeam roof. Follow the official Royal Route to connect the hall with the Royal Palace. It outranks Conwy because interior spaces add another layer to the defensive setting; Chillon has the tighter overall architectural narrative.
The hall was restored in the 1880s, while its roof survives from the earlier building. Look up before focusing on the displays. Check individual closures before reserving: a hilltop panorama does not tell you which rooms will be accessible.
