The Scream and Madonna were stolen from Oslo’s Munch Museum in 2004 and recovered two years later. MUNCH records an irremovable stain in The Scream’s lower-left corner. This was a different version from the Scream taken from Norway’s National Gallery in 1994.

That lasting physical mark puts Oslo above Frankfurt’s restored pair. Dresden ranks higher for the disruption of an entire jewellery ensemble. The important distinction is between getting an object back and recovering its earlier condition; a successful return can still leave an irreversible loss.
