NGC 4038 and NGC 4039 are interacting galaxies. This Hubble composite combines visible and near-infrared observations; bright star-forming regions sit among dark dust patches. We finish here because the scene brings together structure, obscuration and active star formation.
Compare the two bright cores with the disturbed material between them. The long tails behind the nickname are clearer in wider views, so this close portrait does not show the whole encounter. Which image made you look beyond colour and notice a physical process?
