Backups win our editorial ranking because a lost or broken phone can also mean lost information. Enable iCloud Backup on iPhone; its usual automatic routine requires power, Wi-Fi and a locked screen. On Android with Google services, review Backup in Google settings and select the data you want saved.

Check the last successful backup and available account storage. Device backup is not a promise that every app, file or photo is covered: Android apps vary, and photo backup needs attention separately. Check irreplaceable items rather than assuming a switch covers everything. Frequent travelers may still prefer maps at #1, but we give the top position to preparation that protects information you cannot simply buy again.
