The first MX-5 appeared in 1989. Mazda chose an open body and rear-wheel drive after considering other layouts. Its development ideal was Jinba Ittai: a close relationship between driver and car, rather than a contest to pack in the most power.

It earns sixth for making the lightweight roadster a compelling alternative to technical excess. Our innovation and competition emphasis keeps it below the rotary RX-7; a ranking centred on everyday driving enjoyment could put it first. The lesson is to distinguish a purpose from a horsepower number.
