Compare The Silence of the Lambs (1991) with The Father (2020): both earned Hopkins Best Actor Oscars. One performance exerts control; the other makes loss of control deeply unsettling. Watch attention and timing rather than counting screen minutes.
He beats Olivier because we prefer the intimacy of these screen performances to the more declamatory model exemplified by Hamlet. Nicholson receives our edge for volatility and audience connection. If minimal gestures matter most, Hopkins belongs higher; seventh is a judgement about priorities, not a measure of how difficult either role was.
