One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) is the starting point: Nicholson’s Best Actor win anchors a performance that mixes mischief, defiance and vulnerability. His supporting nomination for A Few Good Men (1992) offers a contrast in authority.

He beats Hopkins because we give a slight edge to that volatile connection with the viewer. Hopkins has the stronger precision argument, so swapping them is defensible. Pacino wins above on our preference for wider swings of emotional exposure. Sixth values a vivid dramatic persona without mistaking recognisability for a lack of craft.
