Philadelphia (1993) and Forrest Gump (1994) brought Hanks consecutive Best Actor wins, at the 1994 and 1995 ceremonies. They are useful contrasting starting points: one relies on dignity under pressure, the other on a carefully sustained character voice.

He beats Freeman for our preference for the broader contrast between these leading roles. Olivier wins above on formal ambition. A viewer who values emotional accessibility most can move Hanks much higher. Ninth weighs dramatic craft without adding comedy, box-office receipts or affection for the actor as extra points.
