Istanbul earns fifth for the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Bosphorus setting. The strait separates its European and Asian sides: it qualifies geographically without being entirely European.
It beats Amsterdam on the contrast between monuments and the water; Barcelona takes fourth for our preferred blend of architecture, old streets and seaside time.
