New Zealand’s highest mountain anchors a national park of ice, rock and glacier-shaped valleys. The Department of Conservation also records Aoraki’s deep significance to Ngāi Tahu. We include the destination because a mountain landscape carries cultural meaning as well as physical scale. Match a valley walk to current conditions and respect local guidance; park access should not be confused with the skills needed for an alpine ascent.
