A column is a vertical support with a shaft; in classical architecture its top is the capital. The Parthenon photograph shows Doric columns. To compare classical orders, the National Gallery recommends looking at the capitals rather than judging by height alone.
Trace a column from bottom to top, then compare its neighbours. Columns recur in entrances and arcades later in the list. Describe the visible form first: a row of columns and the roofed entrance they might frame are different scales of observation.
