The 1969 Camaro Z/28 used a 302-cubic-inch V8; the museum lists its example at 290 hp with a four-speed manual. Choosing this version gives Chevrolet a different argument from the big-block Chevelle. Z/28 and SS identify different packages.

It edges the Challenger because a smaller, specific engine package gives this shortlist a stronger contrast than another large-engine pony car. The 442 places higher under our traditional-muscle emphasis. Put compact pony-car character first and the Camaro moves up: displacement alone is a poor way to judge appeal.
