The Beetle’s rounded roof, separate-looking wings and rear-engine arrangement make a coherent, instantly readable shape. Its development under Nazi rule must be distinguished from the post-war civilian production that began in Wolfsburg in 1945 under British trusteeship. We rank the Type 1 second for the durability of its visual identity across decades. Recognizing design longevity does not erase the political origins or the wartime history of the manufacturer.
