Nintendo dates Super Famicom’s Japanese arrival to 1990. Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country make a strong case for the system’s readable worlds and characterful 2D action. The photograph shows the North American SNES design, not the Japanese shell.

It beats PlayStation because we prefer its focused 2D experience to early 3D presentation. PS2 edges it for variety. Choose SNES first if jumping, timing and colourful worlds are your priorities; choose PlayStation instead if cinematic adventures drive your nostalgia.
