Which classic console deserves first place: PS2, SNES or a Sega favourite? We rank ten original console families first released between 1983 and 2006, including handhelds. This is an editorial shortlist, ordered by lasting game-library appeal, then variety and distinctive ways to play; it is not a sales or performance league.
Manufacturer sources checked on 10 October 2026 support the games and hardware details. Regional names and photographed versions are identified. Modern mini reissues are excluded. For practical tech, see our phone features and student apps rankings.
