El Jem’s third-century amphitheatre is a freestanding stone structure on flat ground. UNESCO highlights its surviving seating supports, arena and underground passages. Its estimated capacity of about 35,000 is useful context, but the reason for our first place is the way the remains expose both the exterior structure and the machinery of an arena.

Study the upper arcades and then the lower spaces that are open during your visit. What changes when you imagine the vanished arena floor above the service passages? El Jem is our strongest choice for connecting an arena’s public face with its supporting infrastructure. Confirm local opening and access arrangements before travelling; the UNESCO page is a heritage description, not a live ticket calendar.
