Built around AD 90 for the legionaries at Isca, Caerleon shows an amphitheatre as part of a military community. Its low stone remains and grassy oval offer a different experience from a tall, enclosed arena: the building’s footprint matters more than an intact façade.

Use the oval as your starting point, then compare the entrances and surviving walls. This is our choice for understanding an arena at ground level rather than chasing the most imposing skyline. Cadw warns that poor weather can make the ground muddy and restrict access; check its visitor page before travelling.
