Saintes’ amphitheatre dates to around AD 40–50 and takes advantage of a natural slope. Rather than judging it by missing upper walls, look at how the terrain helps define the seating bowl. It belongs here because it makes the relationship between landscape and Roman construction especially easy to consider.

A useful viewing exercise is to compare the arena level with the rise of the surrounding ground. Would the same building feel different on a flat site? The local tourism office lists an ongoing restoration project, so consult its current visitor listing for routes and opening arrangements before planning your stop.
