Mérida’s official tourism service dates the amphitheatre to 8 BC, supported by inscriptions. It stands beside the Roman theatre, giving visitors a useful comparison between two different types of performance space. The exposed central pit once supported the wooden arena flooring and the equipment beneath it.

Compare the arena’s oval plan with the neighbouring theatre rather than treating the names as interchangeable. Then examine the pit to think about the work required beneath a spectacle. We include Mérida for this combination of building types and visible infrastructure; check the monument’s official visitor links when arranging admission.
